What are meta tags?

Meta tags are HTML elements in your page's <head> that provide metadata about your page to search engines and social media platforms. The most important ones for SEO and social sharing are:

  • title — The page title shown in search results and browser tabs
  • meta description — The snippet shown below your title in search results
  • og:title, og:description, og:image — Control how your link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack
  • twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:image — Control how your link looks on Twitter/X

Why do Open Graph images matter?

Links with OG images get 2-5x more clicks on social media. When you share a link without an og:image, platforms show a plain text link or a generic placeholder. With a beautiful OG image, your link stands out in feeds and messaging apps.

OGMagic lets you generate OG images instantly via API — no design tools needed. Just include the API URL as your og:image and every page gets a unique, professional preview image.

Meta tag best practices

  • Keep your title under 60 characters so it doesn't get truncated in search results
  • Keep your description under 160 characters for optimal display
  • Use 1200×630 pixels for OG images (the standard that works everywhere)
  • Always use absolute URLs for og:image (relative paths won't work)
  • Set twitter:card to summary_large_image for the best Twitter/X display
  • Test your tags with our free OG checker tool
